About

About the Artist

Deborah grew up on a ranch in western South Dakota. After graduating high school, she spent time in Montana where she attended Montana State University. Later, she settled in Sundance, Wyoming. Sundance is rich in culture, near our country's first national monument, Devils Tower, and home to many tales of the west. As they say, the infamous bank robber the “Sundance Kid” got his name in this small town. Similarly, this special region is what coined the name Sundance Clayworks.

In her mid-twenties, Deborah spontaneously attended a pottery class at the Dahl Fine Arts Center in Rapid City, South Dakota. This class sparked her lifelong development in the ceramic arts. Deborah moved with her family to Baker City, Oregon in 2016 and continued with her love of pottery. Deborah has continued to master her craft over the last thirty years, is now showcased with other artists at many galleries, and has a mobile gallery of her own. Deborah’s story, childhood, artistic ability shine through her work.

Influences

The diversity of my work is a reflection of my life and environment. The creamy white of yucca blooms, canning in Grandma's old blue jars, the chunky stitches on a vintage patchwork quilt, or my daughters' "no-rules" approach to finger paint.

My pottery often features hand applied embellishments and numerous techniques to detail my designs. Sometimes I favor the starkness of white-on-white to highlight form, and, other times, things just need a pop of color.
